Your Vagus Nerve, Fatigue and Happiness

By October 12, 2018Lifestyle, Stress, Wellness

The vagus nerve is one of your twelve cranial nerves located in your brain extending to most of your major organs and is linked to controlling your levels of stress and anxiety, moods as well as digestion.

When your vagus nerve is activated, it increases your alertness and wakefulness by increasing orexin in the prefrontal cortex of your brain, which has shown to decrease your daytime sleepiness and fatigue. When this nerve has low tone, or isn’t activated it causes symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, lack of motivation and trouble sleeping, inability to concentrate and brain fog, a feeling of being ”wired but tired” , gut and digestive issues and weight gain from chronic inflammation.

Our vagus nerve can also be affected from past trauma and how you deal with perceived stressful situations, as well as from events such as having major surgery, an addiction, relationship breakdown or losing your job, to a generally highly stressful lifestyle.

Research has also shown that higher vagal tone is correlated with how close we are with others, and well as our ability to get into a mental state of “flow” – the moments where we are completely absorbed in a task we naturally find easy, and one of the factors to enhanced life satisfaction.

By activating your vagus nerve, as well as your parasympathetic nervous system, you are enabling yourself to enter a state of flow, which has been linked to positive health, emotional and mental benefits such as increased happiness and contentment, greater engagement and connection with ourselves and others and subsequently lower rates of anxiety, depression and fatigue.

Here are my top three ways to Activate your Vagus Nerve:

1. Improving your positive relationships, connection and engagement with others

So, how do you actually put this into practice? Using a positive psychology approach within the coaching process, we explore how to enter your own mental states of flow in order to increase your levels of happiness, contentment and deepen meaning

2. Breathe through a Meditative Practice

This can be meditation, chanting which has been proven to be a very beneficial way of increasing vagal nerve tone, or a meditative movement practice such as yoga. By increasing consciousness through a meditative practice, you not only signal to the brain and vagus nerve that you are safe, so your blood pressure and heart rate lowers but you’re also connecting with your breath, which in turn increases your mental alertness, self-awareness and proprioception, allowing you to reside in a parasympathetic state so you’re less stressed, calm and in control

3. Re-wire Your Automatic Reaction to Stressful Situations

By creating new neural pathways in your brain to how your brain reacts to stress can be, let’s be honest, extremely hard to develop, especially by yourself. That’s why I find through the coaching process, working with women one-on-one allows them to identify and disrupt both their unconscious and conscious mental triggers that are keeping them in a path of reactive stress patterns. These automatic patterns of thought are keeping their adrenals stressed and themselves fatigued, overwhelmed and anxious.

Using a  neuroscience approach we work together  to develop the strategies and action steps for instant powerful change that allows them to create new positive neural mental pathways to master their stress and start taking control. This process is extremely powerful, empowering and permanent.
